Historical Notes

Created in France during the Turn of the Century which saw the transition from the 19th to the 20th, the term bouillotte comes from the card game of the same name (a version of the poker) which became extremely popular in France during the late 18th century.

A bouillotte table on which the game was played is round in shape. It was originally adorned with torches, which became lamps after a while. These lamps typically had three arms and their shades, usually made of tôle, were adjustable to be closer to the candles so that a subdued light would be diffused.
