Pair of 19th Century French Gilt Metal Figural Candlesticks
c.1880’s, France
Beautiful and ornate pair of antique 19th century French gilt metal candlesticks. The column is adorned by a full length model of the Three Graces; the mythological three charites and daughters of Zeus. Euphrosyne, Aglaea and Thalia – who were said to represent beauty, charm and joy.
A richly decorated large single acanthus leaf is wrapped around the lower stem and on to the circular base which is embellished with palmettes.
The Graces presided over banquets and gatherings primarily to entertain and delight the guests of the Gods.
